I Hate My Writing, but That’s OK!

July 21, 2012 — 4 Comments

I have been blogger for a little over a year now and as I look back over my old posts, I realize that I was a bad writer. I imagine that next year as I am looking back at my posts I will hate the ones I am currently writing. The amazing thing is that, it’s ok!

As a creator (artist, writer, musician, speaker, dancer, athlete) the creative process is something that spans a lifetime. We continue to grow and develop the more we create! All too often we put the expectation on ourselves to be perfect right away, but life stands to show us that you must crawl before you walk.

Sometimes I will read a past post and think, how could I write like that!

I know as a blogger I can get caught trying to refine and edit a post too many times, which delays publishing. If I allow myself to do that I can get to a point where I will never be completely content with the end product! Ever been in that situation?

Being able to look back at my old posts and see that my writing has improved reassures me that I am growing and I am getting better at my craft! I hope you too can be comfortable declaring that you hate your writing too!

How do you notice growth in your creativity?
(Let’s talk about that in the comments!

  1. Practice makes perfect!!! Always look to improve and you will.

  2. I think I’ve had the opposite problem in my writing career. Often times, I become too proud of the stuff I write, before a friend comes along and has the heart to tell me it isn’t that good. Keep up the hard work, Stephen! I believe in you. :)

    • Hmm interesting, I didn’t even think of that. But I can see how that can create a similar issue. You feel like you are going in a great direction and then someone makes you aware that you need to rethink what you are doing.
