This past week, I received some news that will forever shape how I must live my life. It is a hereditary syndrome that effects 18-35% of the population. There is no known cure, and no knowledge of how it develops or is contracted.
I have what is known as Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst Syndrome it is a debilitating syndrome. Also known as, The Photic Sneeze Reflex, this causes me to sneeze after seeing a bright light, such as the sun. This is something I have had to live with my whole life.
Luckily it does not affect my day to day activities. There is not much known, but it does not pose much of a risk for my quality of life, unless I was to get in a sneezing fit like this girl:

So are there remedies or at least measures to take to reduce the symptoms? Sounds fun (not really- I feel for you- if for no other reason than for having to remember the name of this disorder, a task in itself!).
Luckily it has the Backronym ACHOO Syndrome
You had me worried there Steve. Thank you for introducing me to a new type of word “Backronym”, I look forward to using it.
Yes, I learned that word the other day, for those reading who don’t know what it is, a Backronym is a phrase constructed purposely, such that an acronym can be formed to a specific desired word. Backronyms may be invented with serious or humorous intent (Taken from Wikipedia)
No way! My wife and I both have that too! I can time her sneezes when we go outside without even looking at her. We’re all in this together Stephen.
It is great to know that there is support! Together we can manage this!
Fortunately, I have been spared the burden of this genetic condition. My wife, however, is not so lucky. Learning to support a loved one with this kind of difficulty has made me a better person. Thanks for shedding light >ACHOO!! ACHOO!!< on this widespread but often misunderstood condition.
Definitely! I think the stigma will go away once people start talking about it! I hope to educate the masses on the hardships brought on by this condition!
